This blog will focus on my development from a traditional, waste-producing consumer through all the stages to becoming eventually waste free. I have chosen to go plastic-free first, as I think this is one of the most environmentally damaging materials that we are producing in the world at the moment.
Environmental protection, the “three Rs” (reduce, reuse and recycle) and species conservation have always been a huge part of my life since I was young, and this month I realized that it is finally time for me to take this step into a no-plastic, minimal waste world. I was hugely inspired when I stumbled upon the website Trash is for Tossers and found Lauren Singer, an incredible woman who has been living a zero waste life in New York for several years. Seeing how she made changes in her lifestyle to go waste-free made this goal seem even more tangible, and now I hope to follow in her footsteps as well as the many other people who have taken on the challenge of a plastic/waste-free life.
It is amazing what a huge impact even the smallest change in your habits can do. I believe that this will be a difficult but enjoyable process, but I am learning so much every day about myself and the environment as I try new products, shops or ideas. By the end of this, I reckon I shall be living not only waste free, but also a much more physically and mentally healthy lifestyle. So join me on this mission to go waste-free, and together we can create a healthier and cleaner world.
